Gartner Names 4 ‘Software Disruptions’ for 2009 PDF Print E-mail
ImageGartner names four emerging software technology trends that its analysts say will transform the software industry. Beyond Web 2.0, SOA or ‘cloud services' there are more disruptors. “Four overarching trends are reshaping how IT is used in the workplace. Each of these megatrends or disruptors must be evaluated to determine if it will have an effect on the business,” said Yvonne Genovese, vice president and analyst at Gartner, in a statement.

Genovese details Gartner’s four major software disruptions this way:

  • Rise in new technologies and convergence of existing technologies—Technology changes that have been centered on services-oriented architecture (SOA) migration now also include business process management, device portability and mashup-capable content. By 2010, Web mashups will be the dominant model for the creation of composite enterprise applications.
  • Change in software user and support demographics—By 2015, companies will not be able to build or sustain a competitive advantage unless they take advantage of the combined power of individualized behaviors, social dynamics and collaboration.
  • Changes in software and how it is consumed—By 2010, SOA will be used in part in more than 80% of new, mission-critical applications and business processes.
  • Megavendors to support large ecosystems—Software megavendors will want to dominate enterprise architecture and the terms of integration in multivendor portfolios. Focused vendors must coexist with other applications and with enterprise architecture. Vendors must focus on the “business of software,” rather than solely on product competition.
  •

“Once that evaluation is complete, organizations should align business strategy, business key performance indicators (KPIs) and IT strategy. Notwithstanding megatrends, delivering to KPIs should be the primary driver of adoption of new software,” Genovese added.

She adds, however, that while significant disruptions are on the way from these forces, massive amount of change won’t happen at once.
