Progress Software Extends OpenEdge AppsDev for SOA PDF Print E-mail

Progress Software Corp. has updated its OpenEdge business appdev platform to accelerate SOA projects with design, test and deployment support for tools that support Progress’ Sonic ESB.

OpenEdge 10.2A also gets a new GUI-driven way to build or extend Microsoft .NET-based apps — without training or prior knowledge of .NET.


In specific, OpenEdge 10.2A extends, the Eclipse-based dev environment for OpenEdge, (OpenEdge Architect) to integrate with the Progress Sonic Workbench an Eclipse-based SOA toolset for modeling, configuring, testing, and deploying processes and services using products in the Progress Sonic ESB product family, according to Progress VP of Technology Ken Wilner. The improved integration between the two products will let devs more easily create applications with OpenEdge that are immediately deployable within SOA environments, he added.

“It is the simplicity and comprehensiveness of the OpenEdge platform that distinguishes OpenEdge from other development platforms—a point that our customers and application partners value the most,” Wilner said in a statement. “We enhance our software so that developers can adopt new capabilities incrementally, but still reuse existing programs and code in their applications. This translates into real savings as it lowers the cost of software development and deployment compared to other business application development platforms,” Wilner added.

There was also customer support for OpenEdge’s support for Microsoft .NET environments. Tony Vertenten, CTO of Intris, said, “With OpenEdge our programmers aren’t spending valuable time having to learn Microsoft programming languages or .NET application development tools and we can reap the benefits of a single development platform [OpenEdge] for our entire product family.”
